When you are first moving to Europe, you will need to hire a car right? To start with you will probably have no line of credit, no pay roll stubs to prove earnings so unless you have at least 20K in savings you cant just go and buy a car.
Hiring a car gets pricey with the normal car hire companies if longer than about 10 days, so what can do you do?
We went to RenaultUSA: firstname.lastname@example.org in the USA before we moved across the pond and, well technically bought a brand new Renault which we collected at Amsterdam airport when we arrived. Apparently this only works for non EU citizens moving to Europe (something to do with Renault not having to pay taxes) so its ideal if you are moving from America to Europe.
Basically you buy the car at an agreed price and sell it back to them at an agreed price and only pay the difference which in our case was about $5,000 which for about 6 months works out at around $750 per month including insurance and maintenance. We used an American credit card to reserve and pay for the car per month and it is working out extremely well. Having this affordable 6 month car hire has allowed us to take care of all the other things that you need to do when moving to another country and not worry about car hire.
In six months (well actually nearly 4 months left now) we will be in a much better position to buy or lease a car having a credit history in Holland, as well as official visa numbers, driving license, pay stubs and a bank account.
Hopefully this tip which doesn’t have any direct effect on your shipping might be helpful to you if relocating to Europe. You can buy / hire a Renault on this scheme in most Countries in Europe.
